While aristocratic girls were waiting to make a good match for marriage they lived either with their own family or were sent to other families to serves as lady-in-waiting, lady's maid, maid, or chambermaid. Girls hoping to become ladies-in-waiting had to full quite a tall order: beauty, grace, impeccable taste in clothes and jewelry, a talent for entertainment, esprit, and education. After all, their chief task was to entertain the often bored ladies of the aristocracy.
